On 25 September 2015, the 193 countries of the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Development Agenda titled "Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development". The agenda outlines the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their targets.
Goal 3 talks about ensuring healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages". SDG 3 has 13 targets and 28 indicators relating to many subjects, from maternal and child mortality to preventing substance abuse and more.
The number of children dying under age five is very high, mounting to 5.6 million in 2016. Over more than 400 million people have no access to basic healthcare. More than seven million people die every year from pollution. The numbers, as published by the UNDP, are staggering.
Along with SDG4 and SDG8 has the highest impact potential. This is one of my favorite goals.
Let's talk about some examples.
Breezometer, an Israeli Startup, offers real-time and forecasts of air quality as well as tracking global wide fires. Pollution can aggravate breathing conditions, reduce resistance to infections and increase fatigue. Thus, knowing where pollution is high and potentially harmful is a powerful tool in enhancing health and wellness. Although they don't even officially characterize themselves as a medical start up, they adhere to target 3.9 that relates to reducing health risks from pollution.
In the corona era, remote medicine became a very significant issue. Companies that deal with the subject focus on remote diagnosis and treatments and on lowering costs. Mental health has also suffered during lockdowns and social distancing. Tele-medicine goes to assist in these challenges.
Mamotest is a south American company that making mammography machines that deploy telemedicine, AI and ML to introduce mammography testing in remote areas. 70% of cancer happens in low income countries due to un-timely diagnosis. When detected early, survival rates rise to 90% ! On the SDG 3, Mamotest coheres to achieving universal health coverage (target 3.8) and to increasing health care in developing countries (targets 3B and 3C). They measure their impact using five goals including better health (SDG3), gender equality (SDG5) and reducing inequalities (SDG10). On this impact-tech strategy they have raised $1.6M from Merck.
